Description

The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Paul Kruger, the first president of South Africa. Depicted by the German engraver Otto Schultz, we see him in profile and his features are shown in great detail. His portrait has been featured on the obverse of the Krugerrand series coins since 1967. The name Krugerrand is a combination of the name of the president “Kruger” and the name of the official currency of South Africa, the “rand”. Two inscriptions can be seen at the top of the coin, the name “South Africa” written in the two official languages of the country, Afrikaans and English.

On the reverse of the coin, we see the country’s emblematic animal, a springbok antelope, literally meaning a ‘jumping goat’. The coin was designed by Coert Steynberg, a well-known South African sculptor who produced the statue of Paul Kruger in the famous Kruger National Park. Behind the running antelope, you can see the African savannah. There are also several inscriptions on the reverse of the coin. Above the animal is the name of the coin ‘Krugerrand’. Below the springbok are the words “FYNSILWER . 1 oz . FINE SILVER” which gives us an indication of the value and weight of the coin. Finally, visually divided, the year of mintage appears on both sides of the antelope.
